The B.C. Coroners Service has scheduled a public inquest into the death of a 42-year-old man from Costa Rica who died in custody in October.
The inquest for Juan Carlos Salvany Sailes will begin July 9 in Burnaby.
Salvany Sailes was a Venezuelan national and permanent resident of Costa Rica, who came to Canada in 2014 to study at the B.C. Institute of Technology, according to the coroner.
The coroner says the inquest is mandatory because Salvany Sailes was in the custody of Coquitlam RCMP officers when he died.
Presiding coroner Susan Barth and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses under oath to determine the facts of the death.
